Heart failure is a medical condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, leading to inadequate blood flow to meet the body's needs. It does not mean that the heart has stopped working, but rather that it is not pumping blood efficiently. Heart failure can affect either the left side, right side, or both sides of the heart. There are two main types of heart failure: Systolic Heart Failure: In this type, the heart's left ventricle becomes weakened & is unable to contract with enough force during each heartbeat to effectively pump blood into the circulation. Diastolic Heart Failure: In diastolic heart failure, the left ventricle becomes stiff & doesn't relax properly during the heart's resting period (diastole), making it difficult for the heart to fill with enough blood before the next contraction. Symptoms of heart failure can include: Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity or when lying down Fatigue and weakness Swelling in the legs, ankles, or abdomen Persistent cough or wheezing Rapid or irregular heartbeat Increased need to urinate at night Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, blood tests, imaging studies (such as echocardiography), and sometimes more invasive tests like cardiac catheterization.
