Electrophysiology Study (EPS): An electrophysiology study is a minimally invasive procedure conducted in a specialized lab by an electrophysiologist, a cardiologist with advanced training in heart rhythm disorders. During an EPS, thin, flexible tubes called catheters are inserted into blood vessels, typically through the groin area, and guided into the heart. These catheters have electrodes at their tips, which can measure the electrical activity of the heart. The purpose of an EPS is to diagnose and locate the source of abnormal heart rhythms, such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, or ventricular tachycardia. By studying the heart's electrical signals, the electrophysiologist can identify the specific areas causing the arrhythmia. Additionally, EPS can also help determine the effectiveness of certain medications in controlling arrhythmias and assess the risk of sudden cardiac death. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Radiofrequency ablation is a therapeutic procedure often performed immediately following an EPS, although it can also be done separately. RFA involves using special catheters with electrodes at their tips to deliver high-frequency electrical energy (radiofrequency waves) to specific areas of the heart identified during the EPS as causing abnormal electrical signals. The energy from the electrodes heats and destroys (ablates) the targeted heart tissue responsible for generating or conducting the abnormal electrical signals. By destroying these tissues, the goal is to eliminate or significantly reduce the occurrence of the arrhythmia. RFA is commonly used to treat conditions such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and certain types of ventricular tachycardia. It's a minimally invasive procedure with relatively low risk, and many patients experience significant improvement or complete resolution of their arrhythmia symptoms following RFA.
